Well a couple of days have gone by since I got back from the UK and the opening of the exhibition. I have had time to reflect and collect my thoughts together. These are the things that I have learnt from taking part in the exhibition – both from the process up front and then from seeing all the entries for the award displayed together.

We’ve just got home from our weekend in the UK for the opening of the exhibition “Freedom” at the Forge Mill Needle Museum in Redditch. I came home empty handed as I didn’t take away any of the awards, but with a head full of impressions. It was a valuable learning experience for me. [...] You wouldn’t believe what a relief it is to be finally finished. Well all bar the shouting anyway. I have just spent the best week of the summer so far with my nose so close to the grind stone that it is worn flat. BUT I have finished the object that is to be [...] I’ve started another fabric portrait today. I’m using the techniques I learnt when I took the QU class and made my Dad’s portrait. But this time I’m not making a portrait of any real person. It’s more of an abstract collage. Here’s a photo of the first stages. There is not much to see [...] I’ve just got back from a one day master class with the textile artist Alice Kettle. I met eight of the other finalists for the Charles Henry Foyle Trust award. It was an interesting day. The most enjoyable part for me was to meet up with other textile artists. We came from many different [...] I received some exciting news on Tuesday this week. I had a letter telling me that I have been accepted as a finalist in the last ever Charles Henry Foyle Trust competition. I heard about it from Design Matters, where I am taking my City and Guilds course. The competition is open to all [...] Yesterday I picked up Dad’s portrait from having it framed. They have done a great job of framing it and it looks really good now up on the wall. He’s on the wall in the library and when I sit in my favourite chair in there, Dad is looking straight at me. I did [...] I don’t have much more to relate just now. I not done any more sewing this week, though I have been knitting. But we did take some more photos of my folding vessel today as the light was good. So I thought I’d post a few here to keep you all coming back [...] I am so pleased that my folding vase is finished. Yesterday I sewed on the last snap fastener and was sick to the back teeth of it. I worked out that it had taken me 24.5 hours to make, including fighting with my sewing machine which refused to sew buttonholes on the darned thing [...] Today was a miserable good and grey day. A good enough reason to not venture out of the house but stay in and make more progress. I finished off the needlepoint cushion cover I started last year at about this time It is now on stretcher bars becoming square again. I can’t work with [...] |
