After trying out some traditional sashiko designs on paper I came to the conclusion something else was needed. A continuous design was going to cause untold headaches with the construction, so I turned my thoughts to a four petalled flower. From there my thoughts roamed to arabic tiling and mosaics, but that was getting more complex [...] My next assignment for an assessment item is to make an accessory. I’ve decided to make a folding purse. It will be continuing my theme of folding. The idea came to me as I looked at the examples in the course notes. One of them reminded me of a little folding coin purse that Sqeze used [...] The pillowcase quilt is now finished. It is 23 inches square. I quite enjoyed doing the free motion machine quilting this time. I must be getting better as I didn’t clench my teeth all the time When I discovered as I was almost finished that I had forgotten to put the feed dogs down [...] This little quilt is taking longer than I expected. I have used almost the entire pillowcase in making the quilt top. There are only a few scraps of the crochet edging and a small piece of the fabric left. I used the cut off selvedge seam as part of the decoration. It adds quite a nice [...] I made this block last night between chatting to my sister on the phone and via Skype. (What a neat service that is.) It was really not much of a challenge. I should have made the half square triangle squares slightly larger and then trimmed them down as I learnt in Myrna’s class but I didn’t [...] Well the next little project is completed. Either I’m getting settled into the routine of this course now or the exercises are getting easier, but I seem to be zipping through Module 5. This activity involved making templates, which wasn’t too arduous and then sewing the block. You could choose to sew either by hand or by [...] The next exercise was to make our own pattern for foundation piecing based on an architectural theme. I spent a long time choosing an image. It is actually not that easy to find one that can be easily interpreted as foundation piecing. The first problem was with curved lines – tricky to do as foundation piecing [...] Made a little house using foundation piecing. I’ve made one small quilt in the past using the foundation piecing method. It was a kit that I bought from a quilt shop. It was about the second or third quilt I ever made. The kit supplied a paper foundation and I found it a real pain getting [...] I finished my crazy patchwork mini-quilt today. It’s 25 cm square and I actually did put a binding on. When I come to think about it I believe this is the first piece from the C&G’s course that I have actually “finished”. I’ve been treating everything as samples up to now and haven’t bothered to complete [...] This C&G course is having one positive effect at least. It is forcing me to try out things that I’ve just collected articles on in the past: see my cathedral windows piece. I even paid to do a course at QU on crazy patchwork and then never got started. It’s the only class where I paid [...] |
