I’ve just got back from a one day master class with the textile artist Alice Kettle. I met eight of the other finalists for the Charles Henry Foyle Trust award. It was an interesting day. The most enjoyable part for me was to meet up with other textile artists. As the saying goes – a change is as good as a rest – and I felt like doing something other than C&Gs coursework. I’ve had the book Creative Cloth Doll Faces by Patti Medaris Culea for some time now. Julie Duell is extremely generous in sharing her knowledge about many different painting techniques and other art related subjects. I have read quite a few of her topics and found them all very informative. I’m not the only [...] This weekend I took time off from my C&G course. I bought some knitting wool and started knitting a summer cardy – should the snow ever stop coming down here and the sun come out. I also finally made up the cushion that has been a while in the making. It wasn’t really my weekend for [...] Yesterday I picked up Dad’s portrait from having it framed. They have done a great job of framing it and it looks really good now up on the wall. He’s on the wall in the library and when I sit in my favourite chair in there, Dad is looking straight at me. I did [...] Here’s a photo of how I get my needlepoint to be as good as square again. There are no before pictures – I didn’t think of it until now! But here’s one from last February when I started it It got even worse as things proceeded. This is actually the second time it was stretched [...] Today was a miserable good and grey day. A good enough reason to not venture out of the house but stay in and make more progress. I finished off the needlepoint cushion cover I started last year at about this time It is now on stretcher bars becoming square again. I can’t work with [...] Today I pasted together the pieces of the line drawing to make one image and then made the traced copy using vellum. I then tried unsuccessfully to transfer the markings to the muslin. I only had yellow dressmakers carbon paper and that really wasn’t good enough. I can just about see half of the markings but [...] I’ve enrolled in a course at Quilt University on fabric portraits. It’s given by Marilyn Belford, who has made many award-winning fabric portraits. I’m going to make a fabric portrait of my Dad from this photo. To make a pattern for the quilt, I need to take a photograph of the subject and posterize it. After [...] I have been playing around with ideas for my container. It will be my first assessment piece for the C&Gs course. I’m not going to say too much about it now.
