Having said that I was going to make a start on the quilt top I had to get into the studio at the weekend. It was raining and cold and generally a miserable autumn day so there was not much incentive for putting one’s nose outside the door. In fact I don’t think I did all [...] These are the results of the latest round of dyeing. The image here may be a little dark. They really aren’t as dark as I would like. But I feel I am going round in circles now with the overdyeing and not achieving any better results for all the time and effort I am expending. So… I have [...] Well the overdyeing didn’t do quite what I expected. Just a wee bit of overkill perhaps? From left to right: Today I can show you the rest of my dyeing results. Here is the blue-green gradation, which will be fine for my next piece. The brown gradation didn’t come out nearly dark enough. I shall have a go at overdyeing at least the two darker ones and some other bits of red-brown fabric that I have. I [...] We’ve been getting in too late to take photos of the dyeing efforts. Until today. The light held out long enough to get a shot of the golden yellow gradation that I did at the weekend. Still to come the blue green and the browns that went pink [...] The experiment has ended. I was quite disappointed to see all my lovely pink disappear, although some magic happened too and some nice yellows appeared. Here are the final results. And now the comparisons. V on the sample was fixed with vinegar, A on the sample was fixed with alum. Odd [...] I’ve been doing some tea stain dyeing this weekend. I’m taking the class at QU. It’s less hassle than dyeing with Procion dyes because you can do it all the kitchen. No nasty chemicals involved. We were given the choice of two mordants to try to fix the results – either white vinegar or alum. I [...] Thursday was a public holiday here and it was miserable weather – grey and wet in the afternoon. So it was no sacrifice to get my buckets out in the cellar and do some dyeing.
