I’ve just signed up for Freeform Screen Printing at Quilt University. It’s been a while since I took a course there as I couldn’t really cope with any other courses on top of my C&G. It meant taking time off the one course to do the other. I’ve been keeping a look out for this course to come up because it only appears to be on offer once this year.
The course outline sounds interesting and covers quite a variety of techniques:
Lesson One
- Preparing your materials and workspace
- The mechanics of printing
- Paper stencil screens
Lesson Two
- Found materials and other resists
- Finger blending
- Plastic stencil screens
- Bonus – discharge printing
Lesson Three
- Flour paste screens
- Preparing images for Thermofax screens
- Printing with Thermofax screens
- Printing yardage
Lesson Four
- Cheap and easy home-made frames
- Glue and paint screens
- Spray paint screens
- Bonus – drawing fluid and filler
The courses are also imho very good value for money. This one is costing me $37.
Just as well really when you see what the supplies are costing me and this is just part of the shopping list!

Luckily I don’t have to shop for everything on the supply list.
Hi Ruth
Great class! Took it last fall. Had a lot of fun, trying most of her technics.
Hi Cäcilia,
I had a feeling that I had heard about the course from you, but I couldn’t be sure. Otherwise I would have mentioned your recommendation in the post. I’m looking forward to doing something a bit different to just dyeing and sewing.
Nevermind. Lyric likes to share and is very helpful. She talks about many other technics than just thermofax screens, which are nice to use but can get very expensive, if you what to use many different motifs.
I have an idea for our next challenge piece for which I might want to use a paper reservation on the screen!
