Fabric Painting

The latest activities for the C&G course were fabric painting. For some reason I only have 2 colours of fabric paint – cobalt blue and lemon yellow – so my colour palette was rather limited. However I think the results are worth looking at. The first technique was called pounding and involved adding fabric paint onto scrunched up damp fabric and then leaving it tied up in a plastic bag until it dries out. I left it in a loosely knotted bag for about 24 hours. Then I opened the bag for another 24 hours and finally took it out of the bag to finish drying out. The results are certainly interesting. The fabric has more texture to it than one can achieve using low immersion dyeing techniques. I think I shall be buying some more colours in fabric paint :-)

I also made a template with computer paper. It didn’t last too long before it started to get quite soggy and then the central shape parted company with the rest of the paper. If you wanted to make a number of images on fabric then acetate would probably be a better bet for the template.

Finally I made stripes using masking tape and cut up masking tape into narrower strips to create this piece. I ended up with gunged up scissors as the glue from the tape stuck itself to the blades of the scissors and then was a pain to remove.
