23rd June 1923 – 10th November 2008
In case you’ve been wondering where I’ve been again, we have had another death in the family. Sqeze’s Mum died in her sleep on November 10th. She had only been poorly for a few days beforehand so we weren’t really prepared for her death.
One of the defining characteristics of Mavis was her great sense of humour, which she kept right up to the end. Even in the last few years when communication with her became difficult, it was clear to the staff at Angela Court Residential Home and ourselves when we visited her, that she was still telling jokes and laughing at them. It was wonderful to see her still enjoying life.
Mavis was an excellent cook. Whenever we went to visit we were always treated to all our favourite dishes. We also had home baked biscuits with morning coffee and home baked cakes with afternoon tea, not to mention the usual three meals a day, all of which were prepared by her from fresh ingredients. I don’t remember ever seeing anything ready made on the table. As you can imagine we usually left with a few extra pounds to be shed. She introduced me to Delia Smith cookery books that have become my point of reference for most things culinary. She gave me my first one which became the beginning of quite a collection.
