Drafting a vase

Although I’ve not had time in the last month to be doing anything for my coursework I’ve not been idle. I’ve been doing a lot of sampling in my head as to how to go about making my vase. Since having it all in my head is not going to get me any brownie points towards my coursework I’ve finally started turning the ideas into reality. The last couple of days I’ve been working on paper models.

Paper models

The starting point came with the help of a couple of books on packaging.

packaging for presents

industrial packaging

That gave me the idea for the base of my vase. This is the first attempt on a straight sided model.

I wanted a tapered vase so this was my next attempt. As you can see a little maths was needed.

The models were looking good so I drafted a complete half-size template and constructed a vase as I plan to make it. The pins will be replaced with some sort of closure that I have half formed in my head.

I just discovered that the computer ate half my post between today and yesterday. I can’t remember what I was going to say now – but I’ve added the pictures again anyway. Enjoy!

Great to see you back here Ruth, and my sympathies especially to your husband.
I lost my mom this summer also, and it was tough, heartbreaking.
The math involved in the tapered vase looks way beyond me ,
I am sure you will learn a lot and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
Well Ruth, I have really been enjoying visiting your blog this year and watching you progress through the class. I will take the hawaiian quilting class at QU this Jan, I know you have already taken it. All best wishes , health and happiness , Merry Christmas. Linda [SE] in BC
