Leave only footprints

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

This small quilt was made yesterday evening and this afternoon. It’s not quite finished yet as I still have to neaten up the edges. But I as I haven’t had anything to show for the last two weeks I thought I’d post a picture of WIP.

Guinea fowl postcards

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

The follow up class to Self Expressions at QU has started. This week we had to make a series of postcards. As usual it took me much longer than the 10 minutes to decide on a theme. My first problem was that I’ve not made anything this small before and kept thinking of things you could do BIG but not small. Once I realised I had to scale down my ideas I sat in front of my button box, my seashells and then my pebbles and still had no idea where I was going. Finally I thought maybe I should just choose a colour and get started.

As I was pulling fabric from the cupboard I came across my small squares of Kudinda cloth from the African Fabric Shop. The guinea fowl squares in 3 different colour ways and one in a smaller scale were the ideal theme for something small. (The reason they were still in the cupboard was because of the small scale of the print.) The rest was easy. I chose fabric to match the different colour ways and then started trying out ideas. Once I got going I didn’t want to stop. We ended up eating an hour later than we usually do on Saturdays :-)

Here are the finished results in order of appearance:

Two more galleries added

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

I have added two more galleries to display the quilts from my Self Expressions class. The photos won’t be new to regular readers of the blog. The advantage of the gallery is that the photos can be displayed at a higher resolution and they don’t disappear off the end as more entries are added.

Blue and green should never be seen - finished

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

Yesterday I attached the binding to my quilt so it’s all done now. Here it is:

It’s called “Blue and green should never be seen”. Why that name? Because I chose early on to use those two colours and when I was thinking about the design, this old adage of my Mum’s just popped into my head. As the quilt was to be about myself, and my family were part of the design, it seemed a good name for it. My Mum always said that you shouldn’t use blue together with green - so I’ve just proven her wrong :-)

I chose to use the log cabin blocks because home is where the heart is. And my heart is with my family.

Here is a detail of the figures that represent my sister’s family. Her children won’t thank me as they are adults now and not kids as you may think from the quilt.

The figures are finished

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Yesterday I did some auditioning of various threads and stitches to neaten the edges of the figures on Blue and Green. I finally settled on black thread with cross stitch. I tried out neutral thread - the same colour as the figures and also variegated blue but the black actually looked the best. I didn’t want the heavy stitching of satin stitch so the cross stitch worked out as a good compromise.
